Exploration
  1. Explore the tools along the left hand column.
  2. Tool Options, along the bottom of the screen, change according to the tool selected. Arrows indicate there are more tool options.
    • Line Tool - draws straight lines, shift key helps with “perfect lines”
    • Rectangle Tool - draws rectangles, try the shift key and the option key
    • Oval Tool - draws ovals, try the shift key and option key
    • Wacky Brush - experiment with tool options, try shift, option, command
    • Electric Mixer - mixes drawing in lots of crazy ways, try the option key
    • Paint Can - fills selected area with chosen color or pattern, the location of the tip of the paint pouring out of the bucket determines what gets “filled”
    • Erasers - remove all or part of the drawing, pick a size of eraser to erase a small part of the drawing, or select the firecracker and choices to the right - don't forget to select the question mark icon and begin erasing the screen!
    • Text (A) Tool - places and speaks the letter as it is chosen
    • Typewriter Tool (if you have it) - allows you to type text from the keyboard (if you don't have this tool, hold down the option key while you click on the A Tool)
    • Stamps Tool - places pictures on the screen by stamping or clicking the mouse where you desire the stamp, try the option key alone, and shift key alone, and the shift and option keys together!
    • Moving Van Tool - moves a selected section of the drawing from one place to another on the screen, choose a size and shape moving van, the magnet allows you to select the area to move
    • The Undo Guy - clicking on him will “undo” only the last move you made! Don't forget to use him when you make a mistake!
    • Color Palette - select a color

Storyboard

  1. Develop a plan for five slides with a theme of “All About Me.” You can create your plan on 3 by 5 cards.
  2. Create the slides having one be a title slide and one a “credits” slide.
  3. Save each slide in a folder in Student Storage.

Slide Show

  1. Open up Slide Show or choose Switch to Slide Show in the Goodies menu.
  2. You will see several moving vans with 3 icons on the bottom of the truck.
  3. The first icon is the slide selector icon. Click it and navigate to the folder in which you stored your five documents.
  4. Go to the next moving van and import the next slide. Continue for all slides.
  5. The note icon in the middle of each truck allows you to select a sound that accompanies that slide. Preview the sounds by clicking on the sound icon and then the “Preview” button. To select a sound, highlight the box of the sound and click “Select.” You can also record your voice as the sound.
  6. The last button option is to pick a Transition or how you move from slide to slide.
  7. The last option is to select how long you want each slide to show on the screen. The Time Slider is located on the very bottom of each moving van box. Click and drag the bar to the right to increase the seconds that slide will show.
  8. The Control Panel at the bottom of the screen allows you to play back your slide show. The Undo Guy and the Firecracker perform the same functions as they do in KidPix. The triangle will play your slide show. The triangle in the rectangle will play your slide show in a loop. Double-click to stop the slide show or type command key and period (.).
  9. Save this slide show as a slide show if you want to edit the document.
  10. Save as a Stand Alone or QuickTime to play the slide show back in QuickTime format.

Activities:

  1. Create a KidPix “slide” that utilizes at least 5 different tools.
  2. Create an “Alphabet Book.” Create a slide drawing by stamping the letter on the slide and stamping pictures of words that start with that letter. Combine your slides into a Slide show.
  3. Use the Stamp Tool and Text Tool to create a rebus story.
  4. Create a story map with a legend explaining the pictures.
  5. Create pictorial graphs.
